Wild columbine Saturday, April 21, 8am - 1pm

The second annual spring native plant sale at Morningside Nature Center, sponsored by the Florida Native Plant Society and the Friends of Morningside. Sale of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses. 3540 E University Avenue, Gainesville, FL. (352) 334-2170.

The wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) shown at left was purchased at a previous FPNS/FOM native plant sale.

    Union Street (Downtown) Farmers' Market at the Sun Center, next to the Hippodrome State Theater, in downtown Gainesville, SE 1st Street and 2nd Place. Wheelchair accessible. Live music begins at 5pm.

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens

    This 62-acre botanical garden is environmentally diverse, offering mature hardwood forests interspersed with rolling meadows and magnificent vistas overlooking Lake Kanapaha. Ten major gardens are connected by a mile-long loop of paved walkways, making virtually the entire facility wheelchair accessible. Approximately 80% of the walkway traverses shaded woodlands, a feature that makes the jaunt comfortable during the oppresively hot days of late summer when floral color is at its peak.     Located on the UF campus at the intersection of SW 34th Street and Hull Road, Gainesville, FL. (352) 846-2000. Frequently has programs and exhibits of interest to gardeners.

    Gainesville Koi, Goldfish & Water Garden Club meets at the home of a club member. Sponsors a pond tour each year. (352) 331-1268 for more info.

2nd Thursday, 7:30pm
    Florida Native Plant Society Paynes Prairie Chapter meets at the Matheson Center, 513 East University Avenue, Gainesville. Wheelchair accessible. Does not meet in June, July, August, and December.
3rd Sunday, 2pm - 4pm
    Gainesville Camellia Society meets (usually) at the Millhopper Road Branch Library, NW 43rd Street, Gainesville. (See their newsletter online for details.) Does not meet in June, July, and August.

    North Central Florida Herb Society meets at the Downtown Library, East University Avenue, Gainesville. Info: (352) 481-4564 or (352) 371-3851. (Does not meet during summer.)
3rd Wednesday, 7pm
    Volusia County Orchid Society meets at the Volusia County Fairgrounds' Agricultural Center, DeLand, FL. Meetings offer lectures by professional orchid growers, workshops, plant raffles, plant sales, and silent auctions. Info: (904) 228-3286 or email sharona@bitstorm.net.
4th Sunday, 2pm
    Gainesville-Jacksonville Bromeliad Society meets at the UF Entomology Department, UF Campus, Gainesville. (352) 372-4576.

    Gainesville Rose Society meets at the Doyle Conner Building, 1911 SW 34th Street, Gainesville. The December meeting is the Holiday Luncheon, and the June meeting is the annual picnic. Does not meet in July and August.
